Unexpected Websites for Genealogy Research

As researchers, we all know of common research sites such as www.ancestry.com and www.familysearch.org. Here are a few lesser-known websites for genealogy research you should check out!

  1. https://researchworks.oclc.org/archivegrid/ - ArchiveGrid includes over 7 million records describing archival materials, bringing together information about historical documents, personal papers, family histories, and more. With over 1,400 archival institutions represented, ArchiveGrid helps researchers look for primary source materials held in archives, libraries, museums, and historical societies.

  2. https://www.davidrumsey.com/ - The David Rumsey Map Collection was started over 35 years ago and contains more than 200,000 maps. The collection focuses on rare 16th through 21st century maps of North and South America, as well as maps of the World, Asia, Africa, Europe, and Oceania. The collection includes atlases, globes, wall maps, school geographies, pocket maps, books of exploration, maritime charts, and a variety of cartographic materials, including pocket, wall, children's, and manuscript maps. Items range in date from around 1550 to the present.

  3. https://archive.org/ - The Internet Archive is building a digital library of Internet sites and other cultural artifacts in digital form. Like a paper library, we provide free access to researchers, historians, scholars, people with print disabilities, and the general public. Our mission is to provide Universal Access to All Knowledge.

  4. https://loc.gov/ - The Library of Congress is the most extensive library in the world, with millions of books, films and videos, audio recordings, photographs, newspapers, maps, and manuscripts in its collections. The Library is the main research arm of the U.S. Congress and the home of the U.S. Copyright Office.

The Library preserves and provides access to a rich, diverse, and enduring source of knowledge to inform, inspire, and engage you in your intellectual and creative endeavors. Whether you are new to the Library of Congress or an experienced researcher, a world-class staff is ready to assist you online and in person.

  5. https://search.worldcat.org/ - WorldCat.org is a resource for locating unique, trustworthy materials that you often can’t find anywhere except in a library.
