Thanksgiving

This year has flown by! It is time for Thanksgiving, and Christmas will be here in a few short weeks.

I always use these two holidays to reflect on my family and our time spent together. Can you think of a better time to join family members and ask questions about your ancestors? Holidays and family reunions are the best times to gain insights into your ancestors.

How about asking each relative to give you a favorite recipe, along with a family story, for a family recipe book?

My maternal grandmother, Flora Luttrell Campbell, was one of the best at telling family history. She had it all in her head! Yes, she had her binders and folders, but she could tell you anything you wanted to know instantly. My maternal grandfather, J. Campbell, now, he was the storyteller! He entertained us for hours on end with his tales of his adventures. You had to decide what was fact and what was fiction!

My Campbell line is one that intrigues me beyond end. I have researched this family for many years with my mother. We have information, not all of it proven, back to Joseph K. Campbell, who is said to have been born in 1811 and died in 1894 in Granger, Texas. While there is a good deal of information on the Internet, most of what I have in my family tree comes from family members. We would attend family reunions where my mom and grandmother went to work with their binders and notebooks, asking a ton of questions.

My tip to you today is to ask questions! Ask a lot of questions! Yes, the Internet is wonderful. You can travel the world and never leave your home, but there is nothing like first-hand information on your family to build your family tree.

I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving with your family and learn lots of family history while you are spending time with them!
