Social Media Websites

Do you use social media for your genealogy research? As social media has become more mainstream, users have found ways to make their accounts valuable genealogy resources. Using social media, you can share information or facilitate discussions.

Some of my favorite social media accounts are:

Facebook – there are literally thousands of global forums for a researcher to utilize. There are DNA Detectives, Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness, and groups focused solely on a particular state or region.

AccessGenealogy – a directory of free records and resources for US genealogy. This site is a great way to keep up with the latest free resources and news. This is one tool that, as a genealogist, you should have bookmarked on your computer. https://accessgenealogy.com/

Evidence Explained – this site is based on Elizabeth Shown Mills’s classic book, Evidence Explained: Citing History Sources from Artifacts to Cyberspace. A great resource for those who use historical records and how to cite them. https://www.evidenceexplained.com/

GenealogyBank – a newspaper database that you will need a membership to access. Newspapers are available from 1690-Today. https://www.genealogybank.com/

YouTube – this is the most widely used social media platform. They offer free tutorials, historical films, and quick history lessons. https://www.youtube.com/
