I have written a good deal about my paternal Smith line, and today, I would like to write about my paternal Tisdale line.
I have this family, with proven information from 1730 when John Tisdale was born. I am a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Order of First Families of Mississippi through this lineage.
My DAR membership has been flagged due to a missing name on the wife of Pleasant Tisdale, and which wife is the mother of my Pleasant Tisdale. (If you have any information, please share.)
John Tisdale was born on 20 February, 1730 in Henrico County, VA. He married Jane (last name unknown, but could be James) - the marriage date is unknown.
John and Jane were the parents of seven children, to my knowledge. Pleasant Tisdale, John Tisdale, Prudence Tisdale, Francis Tisdale, Haley Tisdale, Tabitha Tisdale and Sherwood Tisdale. The Tisdale I descend from is Pleasant.
Pleasant Tisdale, born 29 December 1755, married Mary Corbin (1st marriage) and Mary Ann (Flowers) (second marriage) Of the nine children Pleasant and his wives had, my direct line is William Pleasant Tisdale, Sr.
William Pleasant Tisdale, Sr., was born in 1775 in South Carolina and died on 22 May 1848 in Jones County, Mississippi. According to the book Who Married Whom, Jones County MS by Patricia Edwards and Jean Strickland, William Pleasant Tisdale married Susannah Carr in the year 1806. I have traced this family through the United States Federal Census Records beginning in 1810. William Pleasant Tisdale served in the War of 1812 in the Military Unit of Major Smoot's Battalion. He was discharged 1 Jan 1814. He also served in the Civil War, He was in the 2nd Regiment, Mississippi Infantry (State Troops). There is a land patent dated 5 January 1841 in Jones County, Mississippi, for William Tisdale. William died not long after this land deed was granted. He died on 22 May 1848.
My next lines of descent are William Pleasant Tisdale, Jr., Henry Thomas Tisdale, William Jeptha Tisdale, Ruthie Pearl Tisdale, and my dad, Odell Smith.
This Tisdale line was one of the first settling families in Jones County, Mississippi. In Crosby Cemetery, Jones County, Mississippi, there is a memorial marker for William Pleasant Tisdale, Jr., which was placed there by family members of William P. Tisdale, Jr. We are not 100% sure he is buried in the Crosby Cemetery as there are no burial records, and the river has taken some of the graves.
If you would like to share information on this family, and some of the history of Jones County MS, please feel free to contact me.
