Some Genealogy Tips

Here are some tips for your genealogy research that may help you climb over the top of that brick wall you have been stuck on for several years!

  1. Restart your genealogy research. Yes, that is correct! Start from the beginning on that particular ancestor and see if you may have missed some important information.

  2. Learn the genealogy terminology. There are many terms that are difficult to understand in genealogy. Two excellent resources for this are Black's Law Dictionary and Bouvier's Law Dictionary. Both of these books may be read for free on Google Books. https://www.google.com/books/edition/A_Dictionary_of_Law/jLtDAQAAMAAJ?hl=en&gbpv=1&dq=black%27s+law+dictionary+2nd+edition&printsec=frontcover https://www.google.com/books/edition/A_Law_Dictionary_Adapted_to_the_Constitu/zmc8AAAAIAAJ?hl=en&gbpv=1&dq=bouvier%27s+law+dictionary&printsec=frontcover

  3. Use the Free database offerings during the holiday seasons. Ancestry.com, MyHeritage and FindMyPast, are the top three sites offering this offer. (It's also a great way to save money)

  4. Accept variations of the spelling of an ancestor's name. Just because you spell a name a certain way doesn't mean it is correct. I have found some of our Blakeney ancestors spelled as Blakney and Blakeny. Be open to the possibility of a different spelling.

  5. Go back and recheck the research sites for new records being added. There are literally thousands of new records added to FamilySearch.org on a daily basis.

  6. Create a timeline for your ancestor. This is one of my most favorite research tools. It allows me to see my ancestor and discover gaps in my research.

  7. Visit or call the library in the area you are researching. Ask if they have a genealogy library and someone available to help you. Always ask for the hours of opening times as well. Please check our website, www.laurel.lib.ms.us for more information. The hours for genealogy are Wednesday 1:00 pm - 4:30 pm, Thursday and Friday 9:00 am - 4:40 pm, closed 11:45 am - 1:00 pm. Saturday is by appointment only. Appointments must be made one week in advance. Email geneal@laurel.lib.ms.us or call 601-428-4313, ext 111 to leave a voice mail. #laureljonescountylibrary #jonescountyms #genealogy #jonescountymsgenealogy #hometown #ancestors #genealogyresearch
