Some genealogy activities to keep you busy all month long!

  1. Digitize your photos - May is National Photo Month, and this is the perfect time to evaluate your photo collection. Are you like me and still have unorganized piles of photos? We need to save those photos for future generations and make them easier to share by digitizing them.

  2. Study your ancestors' Military history - In the United States, Memorial Day is celebrated on the last Monday of May. Your ancestor may have been among those killed in action, so take the time to study the details of their service. Remember, Memorial Day is to honor those who died fighting while in the military, and all veterans are celebrated on Veterans Day.

  3. Old Maps - Don't forget to look for old maps that cover places your ancestors lived. Exploring maps through various websites can tell you if the area was a community, a rural area, or was it near a migration route, railroad, or highway? Two notable websites are the David Rumsey Map Collection, https://www.davidrumsey.com/, and the Library of Congress, https://www.loc.gov/maps/

  4. Ancestral Homes - Find and visit your ancestors home(s). As a family historian, we study the whole family, not just people, but places and objects that were important to them. Use the following to help you in your research:

    • Deeds and other land records

    • Permits

    • Tax records

    • Local and County histories

    • City Directories

    • U. S. Census records

  5. Take virtual visits - While traveling to your ancestor's home may be a wonderful idea, it is not always a practical one. Technology can help you with a virtual visit. Using Google Earth, https://earth.google.com/web/@0,0,0a,0d,0y,0h,0t,0r/data=CgRCAggBQgIIAEoNCP___________wEQAA, and Google Maps, www.google.com/maps, will give you the ability to see a "street" view of the places that Google's network of employees has photographed.
