Favorite Family Recipes

With the holidays here, isn't this a great time to pull out your favorite family recipes and create a family recipe book? What a wonderful gift this would be!

There are only four simple steps to create what could become a family heirloom.

  1. Start your book. Decide if you want a hard back book or a spiral bound book. I prefer spiral bound since it is easier to open.

  2. Add your recipes and photos. Do you have one of your great-grandmother's recipes? Or one of your grandfather's favorites? If you have a photo of your ancestor, insert it with your recipe.

  3. Customize each page of your book. Include a dedication to the person from whom you got the recipe. You could add a special memory of your ancestor on the page as well.

  4. Publish your book. You can self-publish your book or search the internet for a book publisher.

My most favorite recipe for the holidays is from my maternal grandmother. She always called this potato candy. It is also known as depression candy. Here is her recipe.

Ingredients: (There are no measured amounts to my grandmother's recipe. She said to eyeball it)

White potatoes (I use one large potato)

Creamy peanut butter - if you like chunky peanut butter, I am sure it will be just as good.

Confectioner's sugar

Vanilla

Peel and slice your potato. Cover with water and boil until tender. Drain the water and put the potato in a mixing bowl. Add the confectioner's sugar and vanilla and mix. This should form a stiff dough. It should be the consistency of cookie dough. If you want to roll your dough out on your counter, please do so, but I use a sheet of waxed paper with a little confectioner's sugar sprinkled on it. Saves cleanup time! Roll out the dough to your desired thickness. Once you have the dough rolled out, spread your peanut butter on top and roll up your candy. You can use the waxed paper to help with this. Chill for a few hours, slice and serve. (I store mine in an airtight bowl in the fridge).

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone
